St. John Paul II Elementary Kicks Off School Year with Joyful Open House
Families, students, and staff gathered at St. John Paul II Elementary for a joyful Open House on Monday, August 18 to begin the new school year. The evening opened with a prayer led by Fr. Yamato, followed by a major announcement that set a celebratory tone for the year ahead.
Principal Sarah Timmer shared that, thanks to a generous donor, every family will receive a $750 tuition credit per child. The gift was given as a “thank you” to families for choosing Catholic education and for their investment in the Catholic community.
The evening included a mix of celebration, announcements, and fellowship. Students cheered for teachers and staff during introductions, and Fr. Yamato offered a blessing over the children’s backpacks. Meanwhile, Semper Youth Leaders and PE teacher Mr. Dan Dobesh held the first year's recess for students while parents gathered for school updates.
Several leaders also highlighted upcoming events and new initiatives:
- Courtney Deinert, Communications Director, unveiled the school’s brand-new St. John Paul II Elementary App.
- Renee LeBrun, Development Director, invited families to the Annual Fall Festival on September 10, now bigger and better as we involve the whole pastorate!
- Nicole Fuhrer, representing the Mitchell Catholic Foundation, announced that more than $100,000 in endowment distributions supported the school this past year, including a milestone achievement for the Teacher Salary Endowment of over $1.1 million as we strive to reach $1.5 million in investments.
- Kelli Mueller, Parent Club Leader, invited parents to the Parent Social on September 24 at 6:30 PM Palace City Brewery.
- Briana Mueller shared that Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will now be part of the curriculum for PreK and Kindergarten students on Fridays.
- Brenda Mitzel, Director of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Sioux Falls, reflected on the mission of Catholic schools and spoke about the school’s transition to classical education.
The evening concluded with students visiting classrooms, dropping off supplies, and meeting their teachers—a tradition that always brings energy and excitement to the start of the school year.
With faith, gratitude, and joy as its foundation, St. John Paul II Elementary looks forward to a meaningful and faith-filled year ahead.
